Einsiedeln – Culture and Nature!

Einsiedeln lies at around 900 meters above sea level in a pre-Alpine high valley landscape in the heart of primeval Switzerland and is Switzerland’s most important place of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary with an impressive Baroque monastery complex dating from the 18th century. It is an imposing focal point and destination for enthusiastic pilgrims. The Benedictine monastery has a good thousand years of history on display. Since the Middle Ages, the place with its “Black Madonna” has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The Way of St. James passes by here, and the numerous pilgrims’ hostels of the past have now turned into hotels for vacationers and pilgrims. In addition to interesting guided tours of the monastery and village, a visit to the newly opened milk factory or the gingerbread museum is recommended.
